Getting Started with Facebook…
August 9, 2010 | Leave a Comment
While there’s been all this talk about reaching your patients through Facebook fan pages, we’ve come to realize that the whole social networking thing can be pretty overwhelming. We get a lot of questions from doctors simply wondering where to even start. While it’s something we gladly do for our own doctors, we want to make it easy for everybody to get their practice on Facebook regardless of whether they’re onboard with DoctorBase.
That’s why we’ve found a great how-to video on YouTube that show you step-by-step instructions for creating a Facebook page:
The best way to familiarize yourself with Facebook before creating and maintaining your fan page is to create a simple profile. By doing so, you can explore the site and learn how it can be used to reach current and prospective patients. Once you’ve created a profile, you’ll then be able to create a fan page. You can also add staff members as administrators of the fan page, to be sure that it’s being maintained at a standard suitable for your patients.
More on how to manage privacy & create a fanpage next time…

20k Word-of-Mouth Referrals and Counting…
August 8, 2010 | Leave a Comment
It seems like just a short time ago when we announced we had generated our 10,000th word-of-mouth referral via Facebook & Twitter. Oh wait, it was only a month-and-a-half ago! We’ll refrain from any more self-adulation, but we do want to thank all of our doctors for continuing to make PANDA even better at automating your word-of-mouth referrals…
Thank you!
We also sent out a few tokens of our appreciation this past week to the offices that have been the top PANDA users, and will be announcing another PANDA contest soon. In the meantime, keep the great feedback coming, and 30k will be just around the corner…

Social Networking Increases +40% in the Past Year…
August 2, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Nielsen (the ratings company) released findings this week that Internet users spend about 23% of their time on social networking sites like Facebook & Twitter – over a 40% increase in the past year. That’s over twice as much time as people spend online gaming, and almost 3x as much time as most spend reading & sending email.
So, with your patients spending their web-surfing time on social networking sites, have you set up your own profile on Facebook yet? If not, we’d be happy to set up your profile on both Facebook & Twitter for you!
Learn more about how DoctorBase works, and how it will put social networking to work for your practice. Join us for a special webinar this Thursday evening with guest speaker Dr. Martin Jablow.

ABC News Interview with Facebook Founder…
July 26, 2010 | Leave a Comment
We broke the news last week about Facebook reaching half-a-billion users. They officially announced it mid-week and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by Diane Sawyer on the ABC evening news. There are a number of topics they touched upon, but for a great overview of what Facebook is all about and how it’s changing your world, check out this excerpt…
Did you catch the part about how “people didn’t have a way to share information and express their opinions efficiently to a lot of people – but now they do…” This is exactly why your practice needs to be harnessing the power of social networking site like Facebook. You have patients who are ready & willing to tell all of their friends about you & the great care you provide. It’s time to get them to start using sites like Facebook to refer more patients to your practice!

Facebook Reaches Half-a-Billion Users…
July 19, 2010 | Leave a Comment
For those of you who have attended one of our ‘Facebook 101′ webinars in the past couple months, you’ve heard us talk about how Facebook is rapidly approaching 500 million users. Well, we’re going to venture out and say that this day is officially upon us. The word out here in San Francisco is that they’ve hit the 500M mark, and are planning to announce the milestone this week.
What does this mean? It means that there are no longer any excuses about how this Facebook-thing is “just some fad” and that it’s only “a bunch of kids” who are using it. Think about it this way – if Facebook were a country, it would have a larger population than the United States. An even more staggering number is this:
People in the world with Internet access: 1,800,000,000
People in the world now on Facebook: 500,000,000
For the mathletes out there like ourselves, that’s over 25% – better than 1 in 4 – of the world’s Internet users are using Facebook. This is no longer some flash-in-the-pan Internet phenomenon. It’s a genuine phenomenon. So much, that Hollywood’s already made a salacious movie about it starring none other than Justin Timberlake (yes, that Justin Timberlake).
JT-or-not, Facebook is legitimate – half a billion people have cast their vote for it. And, we’re fairly certain at least 1 of those is one of your patients. Get them to start giving you those same word-of-mouth referrals that you’ve built your practice on…except have them do it through Facebook so that it reaches hundreds of their own friends & family.

In the midst of all the craziness (and heartbreak) of the World Cup finals this weekend, we almost missed a very intriguing report that surfaced on Saturday. The story claimed that Google has been secretly investing somewhere in the range of $100M-$200M in online gaming company Zynga. (For those of you unfamiliar with Zynga, they’re the people behind online games like Farmville & Mob Wars, and are responsible for allegedly creating 1/3 of Facebook’s $2B in annual revenue.)
What does this have to do with your practice? Valid question. While online gaming probably isn’t something you’re overly concerned with, this move is indicative of a growing online trend – the trend toward making online experiences social. Plus, this investment gives Google great insight into the inner-workings of the social networking that happens on Facebook.
It also brings to light the notion that the days of simple search being the most useful online tool are coming to an end. It’s why Yahoo has launched their own social platform; and, it’s why Google is getting into games that will enhance their current social offerings (and their rumored ‘Google Me‘ project that’s being touted as giving Facebook a run for their money). The major search engines have seen the writing on the wall, and understand where the web is heading. Get ahead of the curve by putting this same knowledge to work for your practice by using social media to generate more patient referrals!

Facebook v. Website…
July 6, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Doctors often ask us whether they need their own website. While a blog is definitely the way to go when it comes to search optimization, a website can still serve a purpose for your practice. It allows you to message your own brand (i.e. – you!) and present yourself to potential patients as a form of an online brochure.
The advice we always give is to keep your existing website if you feel it’s giving an accurate & up-to-date portrayal of your practice…just make sure you’re not getting ripped off! Sadly, we hear from doctors paying $50 to as much as $400 per month just to host a website. Unless your webmaster is running paid advertising for you along with hosting the site, this is waaaaay too much. You can host your own site for under $10 a month through hosts like GoDaddy or 1and1.
Or, with the advent of a pretty cool new Facebook application we played around with this week called Pagemodo. It’s not the most polished app yet, but you can use it to create a welcome page that looks just as professional as the average templates medical/dental website for your Facebook page. (Plus, it comes along with all of the search-optimized-social-networking-goodness of Facebook!)
Here’s what I did, in under 30 minutes, for free:
http://www.facebook.com/MichaelHaverhals
1. Created a public fan page on Facebook
2. Created a welcome page on Pagemodo
3. Felt uncomfortably arrogant creating a fan page for myself
Again, this is all for free – so please don’t fall for claims that a ‘professional Facebook profile’ costs a few hundred dollars! And, if I did want it to look more professional by removing the Pagemodo links, it would only cost me $20 a year. Still a much better deal than $50+ a month!
